The PureFlax Story
The PureFlax Story
Nigel and Grace Liddle, along with their two daughters, are the third generation on a mixed farm in West Yorkshire.
With interests as diverse as outdoor pigs a livery yard and equine laundry, they are constantly looking for quality, sustainable products for people who care about their animals. Nigel and Grace wanted to be able to produce a British product on the farm that would help owners get more out of their pets.
Whether it’s a horse, pony, dog or hamster, through general wellbeing and diet – animals deserve the best!
A family friend mentioned that he wasn’t able to get flaxseed oil in the UK and had to get it shipped from abroad which got their minds working. A lot of research revealed that Linseed/Flax Oil isn’t a new-fangled product but has long been used as a supplement in animals’ diets, So a ton of linseed was duly purchased and pressed.
Following consultations with an animal nutritionist, this was then analysed three times and each time the results were impressive. The PureFlax Flax Seed Oil went down very well with BETA (British Equine Trade Association). The oil was then used by family and friends on their horses and dogs with some fantastic results!
Since that original pressing, Nigel and Grace have sown and harvested their own flaxseed each year, enabling supply to pet lovers, dog breeders, racehorse trainers, animal feed companies and others. The Liddles truly believe that their family dog Pepper is now the shiniest in Yorkshire – all thanks to PureFlax Flax Seed Oil!
What is Natural Flax Seed Oil?
Flax Seed Oil, is a clear to yellowish oil obtained from the gentle cold pressing of the dried ripe seeds of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum, L.) a beautiful blue flowering plant, it contains both Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, which are needed for good health.
Flax Seed Oil contains a particular Omega-3 fatty acid called Alpha-linolenic Acid (ALA), which research indicates helps to tackle stiffness and tenderness, It also helps the circulatory system and aids the ability to fend off immune disorders, making it ideal as a nutritional supplement.
Of all the vegetable oils, Flax Oil (or Linseed Oil) has the highest levels of Omega-3 fatty acids – which makes up about 25% of every cell membrane in the body. This makes it unusual among oils because it contains more Omega-3 than Omega-6 which, it is said, enables it to balance the other fats in your animal’s diet.
Our animals diets have changed over the years as much as our diet has, and Omega 3 and 6 are not always as balanced as they should be. Any imbalance can affect the general wellbeing of your animals, so adding PureFlax Flax Seed Oil as a supplement in their diet all year round helps to ensure the perfect balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6. It is ideal for horses, ponies, dogs and all your other animals and pets too.
PureFlax 100% natural flax seed oil is a highly recommended supplement for your animals diet!

Want to know how they do it? Read on…
Stage 1: Drilling & Planting The Flax Seed
Nigel first prepares the land, ploughing in Spring for nature to kill off the weeds and then drilling (planting) in late March beginning of April, when the weather has slightly warmed up and there aren’t any frosts
Stage 2: The Seed Starts to Grow
Stage 3: The First Flower Appears
The most amazing delicate lilac flower appears in late May early June.
Stage 4: The Field in Bloom
After the first flower it takes about a week until the whole field is in full flower. The field is blue from dawn in June then by mid-afternoon all the petals have dropped to the ground to leave the bit in the middle where the ‘pod’ forms. The following day the field is blue again; this process goes on for about 10-14 days until all the plants have flowered.
Stage 5: Pods Everywhere
The pods gradually form over the next couple of months, until they are about the size of a little finger nail. When the seed is opened up, it looks like an orange; the seeds are all in segments. The crop dies off and when the stalks are crisp to break and brown in colour the crop is ready to combine.
Stage 6: Out Comes The Combine Harvester!
Combine time is hopefully about end of September, and is the most stressful process!
The sun has to shine on the crop for a few hours before the combine even comes out, and has to continue to shine whilst combining, otherwise the crop wraps round the combine and you can no longer harvest it!
Stage 7: The Big Sieve
After harvest, the seeds are cleaned and dried if slightly moist.
Cleaning the seeds involves a big sieve to remove the chaff (bit of pod) that can come through the combine and block the press.
Stage 8: Extraction of the Oil
The seeds are stored in big storage bins in the press room, then gently pressed as required.
The oil is then collected in a stainless steel bin, then filtered and bottled.
No chemicals or heat are added to the process which means they extract less oil… but it is 100% natural!
Why is PureFlax Cold Pressed Flax Oil Better than heat treated oils?
Some cheaper blends are heated which destroys valuable Omega-3 content, and may have absorbed chemicals during the growing or harvesting process. PureFlax cold press flax seed oil, so it is simply cold-pressed (mechanically extracted) and filtered making it completely natural.
Preserving Natural Goodness
The cold-pressing technique used in the manufacture of PureFlax Flax Seed Oil preserves all the nutritional benefit of the oil. No heat or chemicals are added to the seed or the oil at any stage – it is just cold-pressed and filtered. Just by smelling the oil you can tell how natural the product is.
Freshness Guaranteed
The key to great tasting flaxseed oil for your animals is the freshness. PureFlax Flax Seed Oil is pressed in small batches, so it when it reaches you, it is not already months old.
Flax seed oil can also be referred to as linseed oil. While they are formed from the same product, flax seeds, the oils are for very different purposes. Certain types of linseed oil can be used to water proof wood, or increase the longevity of paints. However, consuming linseed oil can have extremely harmful negative side effects as many industrial versions of linseed oil include poisonous additives.
Linseed Oil
Linseed oil, like flaxseed oil, is a fatty oil extracted from the cotyledons and inner coats of the linseed or flax seed. Boiled Linseed Oil (or oil extracted by application of heat and pressure) is generally obtained by pressing, followed by an optional stage of solvent extraction. It is dark and has a bitter taste and an unpleasant odour.
Flax Seed Oil
PureFlax Flax Seed Oil which is cold pressed to extract it from the seeds, has a pale light yellowish colour and has a light nutty taste and is used as a nutritional supplement which is high in Omega-3 fatty acids.
Benefits of Pureflax Oil

Why Use PureFlax Over Other Oils?
Salmon Oil vs Flax Oil / Linseed Oil for dogs
The salmon oil vs Flax Oil for dogs discussion has often been debated. PureFlax Oil is super premium quality 100% natural Flax Oil / Linseed Oil for Dogs. It is 100% natural & fully sustainable with a low carbon footprint. PureFlax grows, harvests, cold press’s & bottles Flax Oil for Dogs on the Farm in Yorkshire. Generally, Salmon Oil for dogs and other Fish Oils are extracted from the fish using heat to remove the oil. This process is called rendering.
Key differences:
Linseed has higher levels of omega 3, and a lower ratio of 6:3. As most dietary oil is higher in omega 6 than omega 3, feeding linseed can redress the balance.
Linseed has the potential to produce more DHA & EPA than salmon
Linseed oil contains “essential oils”. These are terpenoids and have bioactive properties, supporting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory interactions
Linseed oil contains phytochemicals such as polyphenols and flavonoids. With terpeoids they have a range of bioactive properties.
Linseed oil is less variable in its profile. Salmon oil will be affected by the fish’s diet and this can give some variation. It also depends on which part of the fish is used for oil extraction.
Linseed oil is cold pressed. Salmon oil may be mechanically extracted by hot, cold or enzyme assisted methods. Although all techniques are safe, there will be variation in oil profile and purity.
Other vegetable oils available may be cheaper, but many are heat-treated or have chemicals added (either in the growing or in production) therefore they will not deliver the same benefits as PureFlax. As a vegetable based oil, cold pressed PureFlax Flax Seed Oil is a slow-release energy source which is – unlike some other oils – easy for dogs to digest and is a good source of Omega-6 Flax Seed Oil and one of the few vegetable sources that contains Omega-3.
Almost all blended oils are subjected to a heat extraction process with destroys most of the goodness leaving you feeding extra calories – but few other benefits – to your dog. If it doesn’t say cold pressed on the bottle the oil will be heat or chemically extracted.
